Raising ferritin: weeks to start, months to stay.

Updated 2 min readWaiting for medical review

The short answer

Expect the first stable changes in ferritin after 6 to 8 weeks, and steady stores after 4 to 6 months. Recheck every 8 to 12 weeks while you rebuild. Feeling better often comes before the number does.

A typical rebuild. A shape, not a promise: your curve depends on where you start, your losses and your absorption.

Ferritin builds slowly. It needs iron, but also protein to build the storage molecule, other nutrients such as copper and vitamin A, and a calm body without inflammation. Heavy periods keep draining it at the same time.

Aim for 50 first

The guide's first goal is a ferritin of at least 50 µg/L. See how you feel there before aiming higher. Higher is not automatically better, and chasing 100 µg/L is rarely worth it.

Haemoglobin changes last. It can even dip a little while ferritin climbs, as your body stops compensating. Watch the trend in ferritin and MCV.

What slows it down

  • Missed doses, or iron taken with coffee, tea or dairy
  • Ongoing heavy periods
  • Hidden inflammation, from a sore tooth to chronic stress
  • Low stomach acid, acid blockers or coeliac disease
  • Too little protein

If ferritin has not moved after a full course, work through why ferritin is stuck with your doctor.

Questions

How fast does ferritin rise on iron tablets?

It varies with the dose, your absorption and your losses. Many people see a clear rise by the first recheck at 8 to 12 weeks; some need longer.

How fast does ferritin rise after an iron infusion?

Quickly, often within weeks, because the iron goes straight into your blood. Your doctor sets the retest date, often 1 to 2 months later.
